Tell me about the pause in the J & J vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration recommended a pause in the use of the COVID – 19 vaccine made by Johnson and Johnson on April 13, 2021. The CDC and FDA have called for an investigation and review of the vaccine as there have been six cases of individuals experiencing unusual clots that occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination. The clots occurred in veins that drain blood from the brain and occurred together with low platelets. All six cases were in women between the ages of 18 and 48. To date, more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine have been given.

This pause in the use of Johnson and Johnson does impact the vaccine clinic at SEA. Individuals who have appointments to receive the vaccine the weeks of April 12 and 19 will be alerted and have their appointments cancelled by Safeway. Individuals can then reschedule for the Moderna, a two dose vaccine. Safeway and the vaccine clinic at SEA will continue to monitor the situation and adjust the schedule as warranted.

Who is eligible?

Governor Jay Inslee expanded the list of individuals who are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as part of Phase 1B, Tier 2 to critical workers who work in congregate (group) settings, including public transit like airports, and are not able to telework.

The vaccine clinic open through May 8 to all badged airport employees and badged Port of Seattle employees We hope to vaccinate as many badged or airline crew badged employees working at SEA as possible. This clinic is not open to the public.

We are staggering appointment availability to prioritize frontline and essential workers who are our most vulnerable groups. Your employer will contact you when you are eligible to make an appointment at the airport’s vaccine clinic. If you are eligible for a vaccine you do not need to wait for an appointment at the airport clinic. Eligible workers can schedule vaccine appointments at any qualified facility. Learn more here.

When will eligibility be expanded? What are the eligibility requirements?

Expanded eligibility starts March 31

The Department of Health expanded COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to include:

People 60 years of age or older

People of any age with two or more comorbid conditions. Comorbid conditions can include the following:

Cancer
Chronic Kidney Disease
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Down Syndrome
Heart conditions, such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies
Immunocompromised state (weakened immune system) from solid organ transplant, blood or bone marrow transplant, immune deficiencies, HIV, use of corticosteroids, or use of other immune weakening medicines
Obesity or Severe Obesity (body mass index (BMI) of >25 kg/m²)
Pregnancy
Sickle Cell Disease
Smoking
Asthma
Cerebrovascular Disease (affects blood vessels and blood supply to the brain)
Cystic Fibrosis
Hypertension or high blood pressure
Neurologic Conditions such as dementia
Pulmonary Fibrosis (having damaged or scarred lung tissues)
Thalassemia (a type of blood disorder)
Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes

People in Construction:

Specifically, those who work in an enclosed congregate, high-density setting interacting with high volumes of individuals over an extended period (e.g. >3 hours in a 24-hour day).
People who can telecommute or work in an office are not included.

Any Port of Seattle employee or badged worker at SEA who meet any of the above criteria must self-identify their eligibility and can obtain a SEA vaccine clinic appointment to receive the vaccine. Port employees can access the appointment link on Compass. SEA badged workers should contact their employer to arrange an appointment.

The Port will continually align with the Department of Health as it expands eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine and will communicate any updates.

Everyone will be eligible to receive the vaccine on April 15.

What should I bring?

Face masks worn over the nose and mouth are mandatory. Please bring your airport badge and insurance card. Upon scheduling your appointment, you will receive a health and consent survey. Please bring a completed hard copy of those forms with you to the appointment. Wear short sleeves or sleeves that easily roll up.

Where is the vaccine clinic?

The vaccine clinic is by appointment only in the Conference Center @ SEA. The Conference Center is conveniently located inside the airport on the mezzanine level, above TSA Checkpoint 1 at the south end of the airport near the international airlines. Keep an eye out for signs that point the way, or use the interactive map or download the FlySEA App for help with wayfinding.

How much time will it take?

Please arrive five minutes early for your appointment. Your vaccination will take 30-45 minutes, including check-in, the vaccination, and 15-30 minutes of monitoring.

What vaccine is it?

Vaccine acquisition, storage and handling will be through Albertsons/Safeway. Depending on allotment received, vaccines could be Moderna or Johnson & Johnson.

Is it free? Does it take insurance?

COVID-19 vaccinations are free. You will not be charged. You do not need to have insurance to schedule a vaccination. If you have insurance, please provide this information and the pharmacy may have the opportunity for future reimbursement for administering the vaccine.

What appointments are available?

Appointments are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays each week until May 8, 2021. There is flexibility for evening and weekend crew shifts. The vaccine clinic is open on Wednesdays and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You will also be able to receive your second dose of the vaccine at the airport clinic. You may also get your second dose at any available vaccination site if you choose. Be sure to save your vaccine record that indicates the date and type of first dose.

How do I cancel my COVID-19 vaccine appointment?

If you're unable to make your appointment, there should be a cancel appointment option in the confirmation email you initially received. Once cancelled, you will also receive a cancellation email. Sometimes the emails will end up In a trash or junk folder, depending on your email filters.

Is there help with translating to my language at my appointment?

What should I expect after getting a COVID-19 vaccine?

The CDC states, “COVID-19 vaccination will help protect you from getting COVID-19. You may have some side effects, which are normal signs that your body is building protection. These side effects may affect your ability to do daily activities, but they should go away in a few days. Some people have no side effects.” Read CDC's guidelines on what to expect.

May I use Public Health Emergency Leave (PHEL) if I have an adverse reaction to the vaccine?

If you are a Port of Seattle employee, no. You may use your sick time if you need to miss work. If you are not a Port of Seattle employee, please check with your employer.

How can I pay it forward?

To successfully run the SEA COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic we need the support of 10+ non-medical staff each shift. Volunteers are needed to support the team effort of vaccinating our airport community. Volunteer shifts are 4 - 5 hours (with a break) within the Conference Center @ SEA.

The role includes: checking people-in/scheduling via iPad, sanitizing workstations between patients, line control, and wayfinding. On-site training provided. Note: We encourage physical distancing, but volunteers will not be behind a plexiglass barrier.

In acknowledgement of the essential role of clinic volunteers, we will offer an appointment link for volunteers to schedule their own vaccination. This link will be sent the following Monday after the volunteer’s completed shift.
