Industry Experts, Business Owners Call For Action to Grow Jobs Through Expanding Tourism

July 22, 2014

The Port of Seattle Commission along with tourism industry experts and business owners met to discuss and examine ideas today aimed at growing jobs and the economy. Several panels of speakers from different tourism sectors sought ways to work collaboratively in bringing new opportunities to Washington state.

“Tourism is an essential part of the economic health of our region and state,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner John Creighton. “It’s the state’s fourth largest economic sector, and we need to continue to find ways of expanding opportunities tied to tourism. In 2013 visitors to Washington spent $17.6 billion and generated $1.13 billion in state and local tax revenues. We can increase that.”

Speakers covered topics from investing in tourism promotion, economic impact of recreational boating, and identifying ideas to improve and expand tourism in Washington state. Panelists came from as far as Walla Walla and Port Townsend to participate, with many looking for more ways to collaborate to attract more visitors.

“More visitors mean more jobs and revenue for our region,” said Andy Olsen, Vice President, Columbia Hospitality, and Co-Vice Chair, Washington Tourism Alliance. “Last year, tourism was responsible for supporting more than 155,000 jobs and earned more than $5 billion for Washington state.”

“This region produces some of the best food in the world in addition to the extensive list of sites to visit,” said Angela Shen, CEO, Savor Seattle. “If we can get more people to travel here and realize it, we will continue to improve our economy and further enhance our reputation as a food destination.”
