The S Concourse in the SEA International Airport needs more than a facelift to bring it up to date from when it was constructed in the early 1970s. The work is expected to cost upwards of $1 billion, on which the Port will need help from as many partners as it can get, especially from federally certified disadvantaged business enterprises (DBE) and women and minority-owned business enterprises (WMBE).
Huge Turnout
That’s why we were thrilled to share our enthusiasm for this opportunity at the 2022 Port of Seattle Industry Day on Thursday, June 9, 2022. Over 250 participants from diverse businesses joined the event at the SEA International Conference Rooms and online.
Kicking off the event, Lance Lyttle, Aviation Division Managing Director, impressed upon the audience the significance of this project to modernize the S Concourse, the main hub for international passengers, within the immense and continued growth of the airport and our region. Illustrating that point further, Jeffrey Brown, Aviation Division Chief Operation Officer shared the projected growth of the aviation capital improvement program and highlighted a few of the many significant future procurements.
Project Need
Diving into the overview of the project, Barry Hennelly, Senior Development Manager, and Ken Warren, Program Leader, presented on project objectives, scope, delivery method, and timeline. Barry and Ken stressed that such a heavy lift will only be possible with the expert collaboration of the following:
- GC/CM (General Contractor/Construction Manager)
- Design Team
- Commissioning Agent
- Construction Management
- Program Management
- Special Inspections
Having been provided with what they needed to know about the project, the audience was also treated to information about how they can get involved. They heard from Lisa Phair, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program Manager, about the Diversity in Contracting Office and its role in establishing DBE goals, and aspirational goals for WMBE inclusion on this project and others like it. Lisa also encouraged firms to attend upcoming Certification Workshops which couldn’t have been planned for a better time considering DBE certification is required for this FAA-funded project.
The audience also heard from Tae Stacy, Service Agreements Contract Administrator, and Angela Peterson, Construction Contracting Manager, information about the contracts process and timeline as well as helpful proposal tips. The presentation was rounded out by a Question and Answer segment where participants were able to ask questions and hear responses directly from Port leadership and staff.
Networking Once More
Perhaps the most exciting portion of the whole event, however, was the networking session that concluded the event. After two years of virtual meetings, people were able to meet face to face, sip and eat together, shake hands, and elbow bump. The conference room was abuzz with introductions between new colleagues and reunions of old ones- the happy sound of the many collaborations that are going to be vital to this project and beyond.
2022 Industry Day was a success in preparing and invigorating everybody for the S Concourse Evolution project and we are so glad to hear that some of you thought the same. Here is some of what you have been telling us:
