Port Plugs into Clean Energy

Oct 07, 2019

The month of September spurred urgent environmental conversations and actions. As a parent, the urgency of climate change feels more potent with each day. It is critical that we act as stewards of the earth for future generations.

At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), we unveiled two new electric vehicle fast chargers during Drive Electric Week.

Petroleum-fueled vehicles are responsible for over 50 percent of our state’s greenhouse gas emissions and are a contributing factor to air pollution and climate change.

The EV fast chargers in the SEA Airport Cell Phone Lot are available to the public through a public-private partnership, including the Port of Seattle, WSDOT, Forth and EVgo. These are an important link in the electric vehicle charging infrastructure network in Western Washington.

Transportation electrification is a significant component of our emission reduction and climate program at Sea-Tac Airport.

Each day, we pursue our goal to be the greenest and most energy-efficient Port in North America. These EV stations meet our Port values for supporting healthier communities and the environment.

These stations also make it easier for our customers to reduce pollution and embrace sustainability.

The business and tech community are usually expected to be the changemakers, and they are significant partners, but often it is government that are the early adopters that normalize progress and innovation because we have a duty to do right by the public.

Within our own vehicle fleet, the Port continues to add electric vehicles and build the infrastructure required to support those vehicles. We're going beyond sedans to electrify our equipment wherever feasible, from forklifts to trucks.

Clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles support a healthy environment and community. I am so proud of the Port and WSDOT as public agencies for driving forward innovation and technology to reduce emissions.

Commissioner Gregoire spoke at the ribbon cutting for new electric vehicle fast chargers in the Cell Phone Lot at SEA Airport on September 20, 2019.
