About
Both past and present, the Port of Seattle’s operations have impacted the Duwamish Valley. In an ongoing effort to mitigate these impacts, the Port established the Duwamish River Green Jobs Program (GJP). With funding acquired by the Port and our incredible partners, the GJP enables Dirt Corps professionals to train participants in employer-sought skills related to ecosystem restoration and green infrastructure.
The GJP is committed to increasing access of these skills to Black and Indigenous People of Color, Youth of Color, English language learners, veterans, and those who experienced the criminal justice system. Though all Seattle residents are encouraged to apply, priority will be given to those who identify as such and/or live, work, play, or worship in the Duwamish Valley. Translation services are available.
Restoration work primarily takes place within the Duwamish Valley, at Port-owned properties such as the Duwamish River People's Park and həʔapus Village Park and Shoreline Habitat. In total, the GJP has organized over 50 restoration events and planted over 2500 native shrubs and marsh plants.
The Green Jobs Program also prioritizes exposing participants to spaces with a focus on green infrastructure, such as Climate Pledge Arena, the Seattle Aquarium, and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). Participants tour the facilities, complete company tasks, and are introduced to professionals in the field.
Youth Program
The youth program typically takes place in early summer over a six-week period. Participants are mentored by Port and Dirt Corps professionals, as well as supported by our partners at the Duwamish Valley Youth Corps.
Youth participants receive a stipend of $18/hr. for their time, with lunch provided on workdays.
Adult Program
The adult program commences in the fall and spans over ten weeks. To accommodate regular work hours, mandatory classes take place Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Supplemental paid work is also offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Adult participants receive a stipend of $20/hr. for their time.
