Positions start in July for youth aged 16–24
Even before the pandemic, most of us knew that it’s traditionally harder for disadvantaged young people to get job skills that lead to careers that pay well. Then, when COVID-19 hit our economy, that injustice was aggravated significantly.
Certainly, the pandemic set everyone back in some way. But a setback that could affect your career for the rest of your life is one of the most heartbreaking.
Internships are one of the best ways young people can get work experience, both in a specific field and on what it takes to be a responsible employee. Building on the success of the Port’s Opportunity Youth Initiative — which we created last year to help fill the gap of internships due to the pandemic — the Commission recently authorized $2 million to fund more than 200 internships in Port-related industries.
The Port is working with Goodwill, Partner in Employment, Seattle Parks Foundation, and the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle to produce the internships. They’ll serve disadvantaged youth aged 16-24 in south King County and focus on opportunities in aviation, maritime, construction, and green economy. Applications will be available soon for positions between July and December.
