Quality Jobs Initiative: Better Wages Today and a Pathway to a Brighter Tomorrow

Commission approves minimum wage, compensation, and benefits policy for aeronautical workers

July 1, 2014

The Port of Seattle Commission voted today on two components of the agency’s Quality Jobs Initiative, a comprehensive compensation and workforce development program for jobs at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Commissioners approved first reading of a resolution establishing a minimum level of compensation for airfield support jobs as well as necessary education or training for those positions – an action that will increase employee retention and ensure even safer and more secure operations at the facility. Commissioners are scheduled to vote on second and final reading for the aeronautical workers resolution on July 22.

“The men and women who work on our airfield are our partners in providing safe, secure airport operations and they deserve fair wages and compensation for that work,” said Commission Co-President Courtney Gregoire. “It’s the right thing to do to enhance safe and secure operations of the facility and the right thing to do for those who work each day to make traveling through Sea-Tac a safe and enjoyable experience.”

“Quality jobs include more than just minimum wages or benefits – they also provide opportunities for building a career,” said Commissioner Bill Bryant. “We are adopting a pragmatic approach focused on helping people access the education, skills and training they need to rise above entry level jobs.”

Effective January 2015, airfield support workers:

  • Will earn an hourly minimum wage of $11.22
  • Will earn an hourly minimum compensation (including tips, healthcare, or other benefits) of $13.72
  • Will earn paid leave time (one hour per 40 hours worked)

Effective January 2017, airfield support workers:

  • Will earn an hourly minimum wage of $13.00
  • Will earn an hourly minimum compensation (including tips, healthcare, or other benefits) of $15.50
  • Will be subject to the other benefits and requirements described above

Beginning in January 2018, minimum compensation will be increased annually at the rate of inflation.

Commissioners will consider action on compensation for concessions employees in conjunction with the Airport Dining and Retail Master Plan development later this year.
