Setting Sail for Breast Cancer Research

August 20, 2021

On September 11, the shores of Shilshole Bay Marina will be lined with sailboats decked out in pink to participate in a race that goes beyond the sea – the 2021 Pink Boat Regatta. The regatta’s mission is to fuel smart research to develop new paths for breast cancer prevention and a cure. Through  sailing, the Pink Boat Regatta turns cancer patients into survivors, buys precious time, and improves lives.

The Pink Boat Story

Dressed up participants in the Pink Regatta

The Pink Boat Regatta began with a sailor, daughter, and scientist wanting to do more. Ashley Bell had recently fallen in love with sailing when she learned her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer – for the second time. Inspired by a similar sailing event in San Francisco, Ashley decided to rebrand the event and bring it to Seattle, where she calls home.

Over nine years later, the Pink Boat Regatta has raised over $ 650,000 for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Every year, sailors and supporters don their pink, get their sailboats ready, and begin campaigning as part of an event fueled by a passionate Seattle sailing community dedicated to getting on the water for something greater.
