Port Labor Relations Director David Freiboth Retires

Senior Labor Relations Manager Mikel O’Brien to serve as interim director

SEATTLE — Port of Seattle Labor Relations Director David Freiboth will retire from working at the Port at the end of January.  Executive Director Steve Metruck has appointed Senior Labor Relations Manager Mikel O’Brien to serve as interim director of labor relations.

“I want to thank David for his years of dedicated service to the Port, his wise — and often frank — counsel, and commitment to working men and women throughout and outside our organization,” said Executive Director Steve Metruck.  “His immense talents on behalf of the Port of Seattle will be missed.”

Mikel O’Brien brings years of labor experience to bear on a critical position requiring integrity and fairness on all sides,” continued Metruck.  “She has my full support, confidence, and trust moving forward in this interim role.”

Mikel Marie O’Brien is an attorney with over 25 years of experience in labor relations. She is a graduate of Seattle University School of Law and has a master’s degree in Human Resources from the University of Utah. Ms. O’Brien started her career in labor relations as a law clerk for a firm representing police and fire guilds. She later worked in labor relations for King County and Seattle Public Schools, prior to coming to the Port in 2000. 

Plans for a permanent replacement are under development and will be shared as soon as possible.
