The Port of Seattle is committed to reducing our environmental footprint while continuing to serve the needs of our maritime customers. Our marinas top priorities are to protect our precious natural resources and to help keep other mariners safe.
The Clean Marina Washington program, an expansion of the EnviroStars program, helps boaters and marinas leave a healthy wake. Through this incentive-based certification program marinas assess their operations and implement improvements to better protect the environment. | |
Green Marine is a voluntary environmental certification program that encourages its participants to reduce their environmental footprint by taking concrete actions. It is a rigorous, transparent, and inclusive initiative that addresses key environmental issues through its 14 performance indicators. To become certified, participants must benchmark their annual environmental performance through Green Marine environmental program’s exhaustive self-evaluation guides. The results are verified by an accredited external verifier and published for transparency. The Port of Seattle was the first west coast port to be certified Green Marine. |

Protect the Orcas
Underwater noise poses a challenge for orcas, an endangered species that are culturally and economically important to our region. Orcas use sound to hunt for salmon. Underwater noise impacts the killer whale’s ability to hunt, communicate, navigate, and avoid danger. That noise in Puget Sound can come from a variety of sources, including (but not limited to) small and large recreational boats and all sizes of commercial vessels.
Here’s how you can help protect the orcas whether you're at home or on the water.
Maritime Recycling Program
The Port of Seattle Maritime division’s Solid Waste Management Program is expanding rapidly in order to achieve the ambitious waste diversion goal of 60 percent by 2020. Given the diversity of business operations ranging from cruise and commercial fishing operations to recreational boating and general supporting services, the generation and composition of waste streams are unique to every facility and are therefore managed differently. Comprehensive waste audits are performed for each facility allowing to strategically design and implement targeted recycling solutions.
Besides the provision of composting, recycling and garbage disposal services for each facility, the Port also promotes a robust education and outreach program offering training and other resources on the correct separation and disposal of materials. Specific event waste management guidelines have been created to encourage waste reduction and diversion at internal and public events as well as to influence change beyond the organizational boundaries of the Port.
